Wit and Wisdom jeans

29 Oct

When I met with the personal shopper at Nordstrom over the summer, she picked out these jeans for me:

Wit and Wisdom skinny jeans–$64 at

They probably aren’t the jeans that would have caught my eye, if shopping alone, but I tried them on just to be nice, since she was the expert and all. They fit like a glove and are super comfortable. I’m the type who, as soon as humanly-possible after returning home, changes back into the standard house uniform of yoga pants, sports bra and t-shirt (meow!). However, when I’m wearing these jeans, I’ve caught myself still wearing them at home…hours after having returned home!

They’ve got a ton of stretch and feel like you’re wearing leggings instead of stiff denim. They also seem to be universally flattering. I recommended them to a friend, (who has a different body type than my own) and she loves them as well. The rise is slightly higher than many of the denim options out there–just high enough to cover your junk, but not so high as to be classified as “mom jeans.” The best thing is that the price is certainly right and, if you get lucky and catch them during Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale, you can score them for less than $40 a pop, like I did! Another great perk is that they run at least one full size large, so you get to stroke your ego a bit by sporting jeans in a much smaller-size than you usually wear.

Have you ever given Wit and Wisdom denim a shot?

Do you wear shorts?  I have some friends who hate them, regardless of how good they look in them.  I think they view them as childish, maybe?  Personally I love them, but they have to be just right.  Last summer I found some ones I really liked at the J Crew Factory store, similar to these:

J Crew

J Crew

There are some styles I think are really cute but I just can’t pull off due to my short legs.  Like these:

In my mind, shorts never really go in and out of style, with the exception of denim, which apparently is back the last few years.  I guess bermudas are more common again – I remember rocking some brightly colored, patterned bermudas in the late 80s.  It seems like, though, your basic khaki mid-thigh shorts are always around in some form.

What about you?  Do you loathe or love shorts?  Are there any fantastic ones out there I should know about this year?

Winter Coats in April

16 Apr

Today is the first day without rain in….dare I say, almost 10 days. I didn’t think to snap any pictures of my soggy self and I wouldn’t want you to see my scary cry face anyway. Don’t worry though, snow is expected at the end of this week.

So since it’s still winter…..

This winter I found myself without a winter coat. A dressy winter coat. I have a dressy fall/spring coat but that was not cutting it. I didn’t really want to buy a new dressy winter coat because I didn’t know if I would really need it next year and sometimes I’m just weird like that. I was talking to a coworker about it back at the end of December and she asked me why I couldn’t just wear my regular winter coat. Ah, what?

I liked that winter coat but it’s too big, poofy, and worst of all, it’s short. It bothered me because I like to wear long cardigans and the cardigans would be flapping around out the bottom. I know, I know. I am strange.

I’ve always secretly had my eye on this coat:

The website did not have the exact style any longer.

Here’s what I love about this coat; it’s warm for winters in Michigan, it can be dressy or casual, it’s long, but mostly it’s WARM. It fit all of my needs. But it IS pricey. So here’s what I did. I sold my old NF jacket and I searched this puppy out on eBay. I got it for a little more than half the price (and it’s not fake, if ever purchasing something like this off of eBay make sure it’s not fake!) and with the sale of my coat, I spent about only about $100 dollars on this coat. I am not sorry.

But I am sorry I’m still wearing it in APRIL.

Moving on.

I’m always curious how people feel about dressy trouser jeans and how you feel about wearing them to work. I was researching them so hard I came across this blog that has three good examples. The middle example is my favorite but of course not available (bummer!) but I think they look are work appropriate, yes…no?

I was only able to really find this one pair at Express (sorry, won’t let me save or share the picture), but I didn’t like how wide the waistband was with belt loops. If they didn’t have belt loops I could probably deal with it and the price…eh, they were having buy one get one 50% off but I don’t really need any more pants. If it was scarves that would be different.*

So where did I head off to? My trusty eBay. And I found a pair from Express! For 24.99. I got them in the mail yesterday and the only difference is they do not have the wide waistband which I didn’t like anyway.

Here they are:

They are much darker in person.

How do you feel about eBay, do you ever use it for things like this? I have used it to buy several things and I’ve never had an issue.

*Now I’m obsessed with summery scarves and do you know the most random place they have cute scarves? Hallmark. I would’ve never guessed!

Let’s Pretend Spring Is Here!

8 Apr

I have actually purchased some new things lately and am wearing them today. Let’s review.

My office bathroom is gorgeous, I know. I’m wearing a new lace tank from Banana Republic, a new cardigan from Target, and new pants from Loft (based on Lawyernomore’s recommendation).

The BR lace tank is really long. I bought it in the size I normally wear in BR shirts, but I think I should have sized down; it seems to run big. The Target cardigan’s color is what I would describe as neon tomato red. The website calls it orange. Boring. The store only had two other colors- black and gray- but I see the website has a whole bunch of other colors. If it washes well, I will definitely buy other colors, maybe the soft aqua or pink (which is actually a bright purple). The Loft pants are nice. I bought them in petite since I’m 5’2″, and they’re a great length, right down to my ankle. They’re slim fitting, but not too tight.

I’m also wearing a new (to me) lip product, Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain. The color Honey is the one I have seen recommended most often, but I bought the color Smitten. As you can see, it’s kind of bright pink. I’m not sure that I love the color, but the product is pretty cool.

Here’s a close up of the “balm stain.” It really reminds me of Burt’s Bees tinted chapstick/lip color, but it has a nice, easy to apply tip. It feels like I’m coloring my lips with a soft crayon. I’ll definitely try Honey if it wears well today.

Get These Pants

27 Mar

I work very close to the 16th Street Mall in Denver, which is a very touristy area with restaurants and shops.  It happens that there is a Loft two blocks from my office so I frequently pop in to check for any steals.  Last week I found a pair of my favorite cut black trouser pants in my size on a sale rack.  The price had been taken off the tag, so they were likely returned, but they looked fine, so I asked how much they were.  They were. . .$4.88.  That is a good deal in my book!  There was also a table nearby of straight legged pants in black and cute colors for $40ish so as I had extra time I tried a black pair on.  YOU NEED THESE PANTS:

IMG_0872[1]I realize you can tell nothing from this picture, but I tried.  They are so comfortable, and just the perfect cut, especially for spring/summer.  I probably could have sized down on mine, but I get a little nervous about tight-in-the-tushy pants for work.  They have a side-zipper which I love for a smooth line.  It appears they have them in other fits as well, if the Marisa is not your thing.  They were seen in Glamour apparently, so, there you go – if you don’t believe me, Glamour never lies.

Work Wardrobe Effort

27 Feb

How awesome is your work wardrobe?  And how much do you care?

I’ll go first.  I work for a smallish law firm in downtown Denver.  I pretty much strive to dress well enough to look like I’m trying and feel cute, but that’s about it.  I am actually happy with my work wardrobe overall, but the only thing I’m missing is skirts.  I haven’t worn one skirt all winter.  Part of this is because I never found the perfect pair of black boots this year, but part of it is that I’m never really motivated to put on tights and not be able to sit on my foot at my desk like I can in pants.  I am setting a goal to acquire a few new cute skirts and work-appropriate sandals for the warmer months.

Luckily, Denver is pretty laid back in the fashion department, so I don’t really feel like I have to to try that hard.  When I shop, I’m much more drawn to buying things for my non-work life, but I do try to invest in pieces that can work for both.  I would say I have about 7 pairs of pants in constant rotation, and I mix and match them with several  cardigans, sweaters, and button-downs.  And scarves!

What about you?  Do you dress to seriously impress on the job?  Or do you just do what works and call it good?

Cranberry Jeans: Acquired!

15 Feb

In September, I put out a call for help in finding cranberry jeans:

I’m on the hunt for skinny jeans that are a cranberry color. Not this orange-y fire engine shade that’s around now: I specifically want cranberry. I might settle for a brick red or burgundy, but they are not ideal. Any finds out there?

In the intervening months, people sent me links to red jeans from all over the internet. It was great! I got notes like, “I know these are way too expensive, but is this the right color?” and “I saw these at the store, and even though they’re called leggings, they look like jeans!” Every time I got an e-mail like that, it warmed my heart.

Despite all of the help, I could not find the right jeans. I clicked every affiliate link for any pair of jeans remotely cranberry-colored. If a place sold colored jeans, I tried them on just to figure out sizing, on the off chance that the right color might appear in the future, but no! Everything was all too orange or too brown or too expensive or too tight or too cheap-feeling or too MADE OF CORDUROY. Seriously, I saw a pair of cords at LOFT one time, and when the salesgirl tried to push them on me, I said, “Sorry, the color is great, but I’m looking for jeans.” And she gave me this Look, like I was being way too demanding, ugh, customers, who can stand them?

In the meantime, I had grand hopes of using a couple of tutorials to skinny-fy a pair of red pants I’ve had since freshman year of college (holy crap). Even though the refashioned pants would be mostly free and the right color, I kept dragging my feet. I’m not confident with sewing at all, and I barely got through 1 side of 1 leg after a really frustrating evening at my sewing machine. Any sentimental attachment I had to those pants all but disintegrated. Even if I managed to finish this project, those pants would still be a holdover because they were not jeans.

Finally, 2 weeks ago, I wandered into a new location of White House Black Market at the mall and found The Jeans! They were the right cranberry color, in a short length, and they were marked down from $78 to $30! WHAT! I practically ran into the dressing room with them and, shortly thereafter, proclaimed to the Twitters: “Internets, I have found them!”

Cranberry Jeans

Do you hear the angels singing? Because I totally did. The only very slight imperfection is that they are more of a straight cut than a skinny, but whatever, you can’t really tell, and it is close enough because the price and the color were right, amen. I’ve worn them 3 times already, and I love them so very very much.

Cranberry jeans outfits

Hmm, now I see that I wore gray in all of these outfits.  What else can I wear with my new pants, besides neutrals?

Black Friday: In the store or on your couch?

27 Nov

Do you go shopping on Black Friday? I do not. I went one year only for a friend, she needed something specific for her daughter and had to work. I was able to wander around a bit after I picked up what she needed and it didn’t really seem worth it to me. There was nothing that was that great of a deal to get out of bed early for.

I did buy one thing on this Black Friday but I did it from the comfort of my couch. These pants from Express. They were 50% off and I needed another pair of pants.

That was the only shopping I did for me but I wasn’t done yet.

Since Amazon was having free shipping, I did some Christmas shopping for the boys. Just a reminder, I have two boys. A four-year old and a twenty month old. I need to stay away from anything that can be used as a weapon.

That’s more difficult than you think.

So far I’ve got this:

Binoculars for Luke.

A little wagon for Gavin:

When I was searching for the binoculars, these popped up and I knew right away they would be a hit. I couldn’t resist.

Legos Walkie Talkies

And the last thing I picked up…..get ready…..

My boys are obsessed with flashlights.

I think both of their stockings will be stuffed with batteries!

I still have a few more to get for each of them and I think I have to get off the couch and actually go in the store.

Do you like shopping online or in the store?

What do you think about buying toys online? This is my first year buying toys online and I think it will be nice they are already in a box.

28 shopping days left!

What I Wore

23 Oct

Skirt: Banana Republic, thrifted

Shirt: Kohl’s

Sweater: Target (still for sale)

Boots: Not Rated

General Thoughts: I love this skirt a lot: the shape is one of my favorites and it has pockets, which I adore. I love this sweater – it’s soft, cuddly and the drapey open-front cardigan thing is one of my favorite trends right now. That said, I think the combination of sweater/skirt here was a mistake, leaving me looking boxy and without any waist. I think a simple long sleeve shirt, tucked in, or a cropped jacket or sweater would have been a better choice.

Skirt: Ann Taylor

Blouse: Kohl’s.

Scarf: dug out of the back of my car after an unfortunate coffee/pothole incident.

Shoes: R2

General Thoughts: I am trying to branch out and wear more color; most of my professional wardrobe consists of gray, black, navy, and white. This shirt was on clearance for very cheap and provided a nice amount of color. Every time I wear it I get compliments on it.

(Also, a side note: I hate my haircut. Hate hate. It’s mom hair.)

Pants: Ann Taylor

Tank: Express

Cardigan: Target

Shoes: Charles by Charles David.

Necklace: hand-beaded by a friend.

General Thoughts: First, I should have zoomed in, sorry. Second, how boring is this? I do love the shoes (which are totally invisible in this picture, but they’re a nice black and gray round-toe pump), but could this outfit be any more bland? You can see why I need color, right? Also, I lost a little weight since buying these pants and I need to have them taken in; they bag and crease and fit poorly.

I started a new job a couple of weeks ago (so excited!). This means my former wardrobe of jeans, sneakers, and a rotating selection of long sleeve t-shirts is no longer an option. My professional wardrobe has been boxed in my basement, and most of it was purchased three years and thirty pounds ago, so I really need to update it, but need to do so on the cheap; suggestions for your favorite places to find good professional clothes at a steal?

What I’m Wearing

16 Oct

Here’s a few things I wore over the last week and a half:

I’m getting a lot braver when it comes to prints. I’ve always been a little nervous especially when it comes to animal prints but I picked up this scarf at Target this year and I have gotten so many compliments. The day I wore this, I got 3 alone. I paired it with a thin black sweater from Gap.

I always wear a tank under everything and I try to do a color that stands out between my top and my bottom. That day I chose white. My pants are from Express. They are the editor edition. I love them.

A few years ago when I bought my suit from New York & Co, the pants were buy one get one half off. None of the pants I would have picked first were available in my size, but I didn’t want to pass up such a deal. I ended up with this pair of not brown, but not grey pants. They have always confused me. I decided to always wear them like they are brown because when I put brown shoes next to them it looks better then when I put black shoes next to them. I really love the fit! This day I wore them with a v-neck grey sweater from Target, and blue button up shirt (but with a white collar) and the grown (grey and brown) pants and brown shoes.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this outfit. I sort of put it together in my head as I was falling asleep the night before but I ended up loving it. That sweater from Target is so soft and comfortable, btw. I don’t have a picture of the shoes I wore that day, but I want to tell you about them. I picked them up at Payless (no judgment) and they have the comfort plus in them. Holy comfort, Batman. Wait! I found a picture!

My favorite pair of black shoes are ripping. They are patent and I don’t know why, but I’m in love with the shiny shoe! Since this job is only temporary, I’m trying really hard not to go crazy and spend a ton of money, but if something changes, I might go get the black version of the above brown version. Look how pretty.

Lastly, what is your favorite fall color this year? Have you noticed any color sticking out more than others? I have. It’s the royal blue and I’m in love with it. I picked up this sweater at Target too, and again…the comfort, the softness, the price…I’m impressed! Plus, sometimes with color fads, I don’t like to spend a lot of money. But I am really loving it.

I can’t find this specific style on the Target site, but it was right by the v-neck sweaters I linked to above, this one is just a crew neck instead. I paired it with those grey pants again (I promise, a week apart!) and a black tank underneath. I have a black and white striped shirt I want to pair up underneath this blue but I thought that would look better with black pants and I already had this on. Time crunch! Sorry, no breakfast today kiddos, momma was having an outfit crisis! is not going to fly.I’d probably take a cereal bowl to the head if I tried that on either one of my boys. Ha! And yes, that is some serious laundry that I did put away this past weekend.

So there’s what I wore. More of what I’m wearing over the next few weeks is coming on my next post two weeks from today!
