NYX Eye Makeup

23 Sep

I went to Ulta on Friday because I hit the trifecta: I was near it, I was by myself, and I had free time. My plan was just to admire the Benefit blushes and ogle Stila’s In the Light eyeshadow palette (which I am going to get as a reward if I ever lose another 5 pounds- so I’ll probably get it in February, aargh).

As I was wandering, I stopped in the NYX section because eye makeup was buy 1, get 50% off. (You don’t need to buy an even number of things. They were actually taking 25% off everything, which I wish they would just tell you.) I have heard good things about NYX, so I bought two Jumbo Eye Pencils, a Retractable Eyeliner, and an eyeshadow.

(Dental floss pictured to keep everything else from rolling off the counter.)

The Jumbo Eye Pencils are great. They are really creamy, easy to apply, and simple to blend. I would buy these again.

The Retractable Eyeliner is really similar to my go-to eyeliner, Cover Girl Perfect Point Plus eyeliner. The NYX eyeliner is softer and applies much nicer. It also comes in more colors. The downside I found is that it runs a bit by the end of the day.

The eyeshadow was really soft, but I ended up not liking the color, so I returned it. The return process at Ulta was very easy.

Here’s how the makeup looked yesterday.

And here’s today.

Vacation: All I Ever Wanted

9 Sep

My husband and I spent the weekend in Las Vegas with my best friend from college and her husband. My plan was to get uninterrupted sleep, laze around, eat a lot of good food, and be goofy. My plan was a success!

No matter what you wear in Las Vegas, you’re going to be more dressed up than some people (tank tops with the whole side cut out to show someone’s entire bra) and not as dressed up as other people (designer dresses that cost thousands of dollars).

On our first night there, we all went to see Jerry Seinfeld perform, and then we went to dinner at a fancy-ish place at the Wynn. I wore a dress from Lands End Canvas, a cardigan from J Crew Factory, a belt by Vince Camuto, and a necklace by Kate Spade. The belt and necklace were from TJ Maxx. I also wore glittery eyeshadow because, duh, Vegas.

The next day we had brunch at Mesa Grill. This is what a Vegas breakfast looks like.

I wore a Lands End Fit and Flare dress and a Target cardigan.

During the day we saw a billboard for a Boyz II Men concert, and I easily talked my husband into going with me. Our friends went to see a Cirque de Soleil show. They really missed out because H and I had a terrific time at the concert. Boyz II Men (who should probably just be called Men at this point) sang and danced for over 90 minutes. They sang new songs, old songs, Motown songs, and a cappella songs. It was AWESOME.

I wore sequins because, duh again, Vegas.

What’s that? You want to see other random photos from my trip? Ok, twist my arm.

Everyday Makeup

26 Aug

I don’t do fancy makeup. Though I love looking at expensive makeup. I’m a drugstore kind of gal. Here’s what I use on a daily basis, for the most part.

20130826-095135.jpg

I don’t wear foundation every day, but when I do wear it, I like something light that covers up redness but doesn’t cover my freckles. This Almay foundation seems to work pretty well.

The Benefit Hervana blush is really light. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but it has grown on me.

20130826-095146.jpg
For eyeliner, I’ve been using Cover Girl Perfect Point forever. Most days I just use brown, but some days I like to mix it up with blue.

Eyeshadow: Rimmel. Nothing exciting.

Under eyes: I’m still using Benefit Fake Up because it was $20-ish. Not sure if I’ll buy it again, but I don’t dislike it. I just don’t LOVE it.

For my lips today I am wearing Revlon Just Kissable Balm Stain in Honey with Rimmel Stay Glossy in some super pale color I don’t remember- possibly Unlimited Gold.

So now… What you’ve all been waiting for… Before and after photos!

To EBay Or Not To EBay

29 Jul

I have never bought anything on EBay. It seems complicated. There is one necklace I like- its a Kate Spade necklace with a turtle on it- that I actually looked for on EBay, but even there, it’s $350, so no.

Have you ever bought anything on EBay? Are there certain items you would or wouldn’t buy on EBay? Can I use the word EBay more?

Tees at Loft

22 Jul

I keep waiting for these tees to go on sale before I recommend them, but it seems it’s never going to happen. Yes, I actually paid full price for something at Loft. That’s how much I likes these tees. I bought two colors: white and lollipop red.

The tee is the crochet neck cotton tee. It’s $24.50, but I wear mine ever single weekend. It’s thin enough to be cool but not thin enough to be see-through.

I also love the embellished tee at Loft. Full price again! I know! I wear brightly colored camisoles underneath because the cutouts are sheer. I get compliments every time I wear this.

Birthday Purses From Rue La La

1 Jul

I have decided I’m only buying purses from Rue La La from now on. [If you become a member (which is free) through this link and buy something, I will get a credit.] Rue La La is a site that offers a limited number of clothes, accessories, home decorations, and other assorted items for 48 hours. I don’t buy things from the site often, but everything I’ve bought has been a great deal.

I bought this Cole Haan bag a year or two ago and have used it pretty much every day. Cole Haan bags are normally in the $250-$300 range. I got this one on Rue La La for about $100.

I also bought this Kate Spade wallet on Rue La La a year or two ago for about $40. The retail price is around $150.

My birthday is on Friday, so I decided to splurge on two bags I absolutely loved on Rue La La. I’ve been looking for a good-sized crossbody bag, and I found this great orange Coach crossbody on Rue La La for $102- the Coach Ashley Leather Hippie. The retail price was about $250. I love it. The strap is just the right length, the orange is dark enough to not be a shocking safety cone orange, and the size is big enough to hold my stuff without being too bulky.

I also saw a tote and decided I would regret not buying it. The retail price was $358, but I got it for $116. It is the Coach Park Leather Tote. The leather is really soft, and the colors are a little bit unusual. I love it.

Happy birthday to me!

What Really Happens At A Bra Fitting

17 Jun

I’ve been meaning to get professionally fitted for several years now, but I’ve had lots of good excuses for not doing it. I finally got up the courage to do it a few weeks ago and went to Nordstrom on my day off.

As I walked over to the lingerie section I considered running away to look at purses instead, but I took a deep breath and walked up to the cash register in the lingerie section. When the salesperson was done ringing up someone I told her I’d like to get a bra fitting.

She took me back to the changing rooms. I took off my shirt (but not my bra), and she measured me right under my breasts. Then she disappeared to get me a few things to try on. She watched me try the first one on, which was a little awkward but not creepy. Then she left me alone. I picked out the two that felt the best. The saleslady came back to check on me and got me a different size in one of my favorites after seeing it on me.

Then I bought the two bras. The end. It was easy and unembarrassing.

I actually had the correct band size, but my old bras were two cup sizes too small. The new bras make a huge difference. I look better, and they feel better too.

I tried to take photos to show the difference, but they turned out odd. It is hard to photograph your own boobs. Plus I don’t know that I really want you staring at photos of my boobs. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

Tassel Hassle

13 May

I want a nice plain gold necklace that looks like a tassle. I really don’t think that should be too much to ask.

This tassel necklace would be great it if wasn’t all “Look! I’m from Coach! LOOK AT MY BRAND!” And also if it didn’t cost more than $150.

Vince Camuto’s tassel necklace is only 16″ long, though it is better at $98. It also has “gems,” to which I say, “Meh.”

Zappos is selling a different Vince Camuto tassel necklace for only $38. But it is still too short.

Kendra Scott has a tassel necklace that is long enough- yay! But the necklace is more about the colored stone pendant than the tassel- boo!

This Stella & Dot necklace might be the winner. It’s $138, which is more than I want to spend. But it is a plain gold tassel, it’s pretty, and you can adjust the length.

Tassel Necklace - Stella & Dot

In shocking news (to me, at least), J Crew’s tassel necklace is actually less expensive than Stella & Dots! It is only $68, though it seems to be backordered until July at this point.

I Was Not Ready for My Close-Up

15 Apr

I read this review by Brightest Bulb in the Box of Benefit’s Fakeup and thought goddamn, I need to get some of this for my undereye circles.

I finally went to Ulta this weekend and picked some up, in the lightest color available, obviously, since I am a pale lady who lives in a state where it will always be winter forever and ever. There is snow on the ground IN APRIL, and I hate everyone.

Guess what? Not only do I hate everyone, I also hate this product.

Here’s what happened when I tried it on Saturday.

20130415-093346.jpg

Before Benefit Fakeup on the left, After Benefit Fakeup on the right. Hmmm… no discernible difference. That is not what I’m looking for in a small tube of product that costs TWENTY-FOUR DOLLARS.

Maybe I just didn’t apply enough. Maybe I applied it wrong. I tried again Sunday, and again decided it made no difference. (No photo from Sunday.)

Third time’s the charm, right?

20130415-093400.jpg

Before Benefit Fakeup on Saturday morning on the left, After Benefit Fakeup on Monday morning on the right. Third time is NOT the charm. My undereye circles look the same. I shall be returning the Benefit Fakeup and getting my money back.

Have you tried Benefit Fakeup? Did it work for you? Do you have other recommendations I can try?

Let’s Pretend Spring Is Here!

8 Apr

I have actually purchased some new things lately and am wearing them today. Let’s review.

20130408-095422.jpg
My office bathroom is gorgeous, I know. I’m wearing a new lace tank from Banana Republic, a new cardigan from Target, and new pants from Loft (based on Lawyernomore’s recommendation).

The BR lace tank is really long. I bought it in the size I normally wear in BR shirts, but I think I should have sized down; it seems to run big. The Target cardigan’s color is what I would describe as neon tomato red. The website calls it orange. Boring. The store only had two other colors- black and gray- but I see the website has a whole bunch of other colors. If it washes well, I will definitely buy other colors, maybe the soft aqua or pink (which is actually a bright purple). The Loft pants are nice. I bought them in petite since I’m 5’2″, and they’re a great length, right down to my ankle. They’re slim fitting, but not too tight.

20130408-095435.jpg
I’m also wearing a new (to me) lip product, Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain. The color Honey is the one I have seen recommended most often, but I bought the color Smitten. As you can see, it’s kind of bright pink. I’m not sure that I love the color, but the product is pretty cool.

20130408-095532.jpg
Here’s a close up of the “balm stain.” It really reminds me of Burt’s Bees tinted chapstick/lip color, but it has a nice, easy to apply tip. It feels like I’m coloring my lips with a soft crayon. I’ll definitely try Honey if it wears well today.
