Committing to a theme

31 Oct

In commemoration of Halloween, let me tell you about our Pumpkin Party and talk about dressing to a theme.

Halloween is not my favorite holiday and I’m not one to get super-excited about dressing up in a costume. But I am a former drama geek and I do love a good themed party. We’ve been throwing this pumpkin party for nine years, ever since we moved to Florida. I bake way more pumpkin sweets than necessary, pumpkin burgers and don my best orange attire. I dressed my babies up as little pumpkins, but I’ve always tried to go a little less round.

My sister helped me out a great deal when she forced me to get a two-piece orange bridesmaid dress for her wedding. I’ve gotten a ridiculous amount of mileage out of that orange satin skirt. I’ve worn this, too, with a lighter orange shirt with tiny, dark orange polka dots and white shirts.

A couple years, I’ve gotten a little ridiculous. Because that’s the thing about being the hostess of a themed party: Sometimes you have to go a little over the top so that others will feel comfortable participating.

What’s a Pumpkin Party without a pregnant pumpkin belly? Also, see those earrings? I found them at Walmart for less than $5. Big, silly accessories — ideally cheap — can be key to turning normal clothes into party clothes, theme or no.

Finally, I am always on the lookout for cute, orange party clothes. When I found this JCrew dress on sale for $30 (that was $100 off!) (and it had pockets!), I snagged it up.

I had to have it slightly altered — I have no boobs — but $15 later, it was the perfect dress for this year’s party, especially paired with my ridiculous shoes. (Those are Candies, from Kohl’s by the way. I can’t find the link.) That’s really what I always aim for: cute but a little ridiculous. I’m throwing a silly themed party, you know. I can’t take myself too seriously, but I also want to look nice.

So, what about you all? Any themed parties for you to shop for? How do you plan for Halloween?

I love this so VERY VERY much! You rock for throwing this party, and as you say, committing to it.

So, this bridesmaid dress… how many orange dresses were there up there? I am intrigued.

You look so different with long hair!

I really wish I could hop on over to Florida and go to your party every year.

I approve of any and all themes, especially those that are conducive to giant novelty earrings. I continue to have no idea what “pumpkin burgers” are.
